Running errands is hard enough, why carry bags? |
It is hard to run errands and carry bags around at the same
time. It is even worse when the errands are spread across different town
segments. Not to mention jostling with others just like you.
Sometimes we get so caught up moving through errands, we end
up misplacing a bag or two. Then there is also the risk of getting robbed. The
time has come for a break!
I recently stumbled on an App called ‘Weka Luggage’ on Google’s play store. It allows you to store your things
at a place of your choice and pick them up later.
It is like leaving your bags
from other errands at the supermarket entrance, without having to go into the
supermarket. Only this time, you do not necessarily have to look for the
supermarket.
Being a sucker for new apps, I was forced to do some more
digging on ‘Weka Luggage’. It is then
that I stumbled upon what I think is a very enterprising business model.
Most of us know ‘someone’ from a shop we have once or
regularly purchased either goods or services from. In the long-run, we mostly
use this relationship to leave small pieces of luggage for brief storage at
those shops.
Three questions: how many such ‘someones’ can you know? Is
their spread across the Nairobi CBD convenient for you? and how well do you
trust them with your luggage?
The ‘Weka Luggage’
app answers all these questions. It basically says: “You can know and trust everyone
across the entire CBD”.
There are numerous shops in the CBD, mostly in the fashion
and electronic industries. These shops store goods for sale but rarely are they
always full. The app takes advantage of this.
It allows such shop owners to partially participate in brief
luggage storage for you and I, and in so doing, make some extra cash.
A Nairobi street full of storage potential. |
So, if you are in town, have errands to run and nowhere safe
to leave your bags, kindly download the app.
Based on your Geo-location, it provides a reviewed catalogue
of the nearest ‘store-point’ to you. After you select one, you get full contact
information of the shop and other relevant details.
It even gives you the privilege to have the shop owner come and
collect your bag, saving you the hustle of having to go to them. It’s no wonder
their motto is ‘Store & Go play Bila worries’.
To sweeten the pie, it is purely a Kenyan innovation. Even
more refreshing is the fact that it was founded by a lady. I believe it is a
step in the right direction, especially when the call for more ‘Women in Tech’
is at an all-time high.
Uber is the world's largest taxi company that owns no taxis. Likewise, 'Weka Luggage' has the potential to become the largest store-point, without owning actual storage units.

Sadly though, the app is currently only available for
android users.
You can get more details from the Weka Luggage website.
